In March 2009, my wife, Amanda, sent me an e-mail message for a position to serve as the Director of Career & Internship Services at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina.
My wife and I were living in Radford, Virginia which is approximately two hours from High Point, North Carolina.
Although, I was 35 years old at the time, I had never been to High Point in my life. While my network included a lot of career planning and development professionals, I did not know anyone personally at High Point University.
My first act of business was to identify, using LinkedIn, the individual who had previously served in the Director role. I found her LinkedIn profile and sent her a message introducing myself & asking her if she would be open to having a conversation with me about her time at High Point University as well as sharing some market intelligence with regard to the culture of High Point University. She was working and living in the Triad and we had a great telephone conversation followed by several e-mail exchanges. She was most helpful.
From there, I spoke with some professionals in the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Employers (NCACE) to find out more about the Piedmont Triad and High Point University. All of them were very helpful.
In the end, I utilized LinkedIn to get introduced to career planning and development professionals who were instrumental in my decision to accept the offer with HPU!
